I have just received a report that an Oriental Honey Buzzard (Pernis
ptilorhynchus) was found in a back yard in Leinster (a mining town
north of Kalgoorlie).
It was taken to the environmental people at the mine site, passed on
to a raptor care group, but died. The specimen has been lodged at the
Museum of WA. More details will be published in the June volume of
Western Australian Bird Notes.
This is the first mainland record for Australia.
Presumably it was caught in the recent tropical depression that formed
well north of Broome, crossed the coast near Port Hedland (barometric
pressure ~995) and passed through Western Australia dumping very
welcome rain.
