Further to Paul Peakes note on the Chiltern (Victoria) fire situation.

I have been in contact with a Chiltern birdo for the last few days now and
the locals are pretty scared about the fires in the Eldorado and Woolshed
Valley areas to the south of Chiltern. I understand the Chiltern part of
the box-ironbark park is not yet fire affected but the Mt Pilot sections
have been burnt and many threatened orchid localities and possibly Barking
Owl localities have been affected.

There is a huge plume of smoke over the Beechworth area and motorists
needed to have their lights on while travelling down the Hume freeway on
Wednesday I believe. At the moment I hope the situation is stable but
haven't heard anything since last night.

Having been to Chiltern at Christmas I can certainly understand the risk
faced by people. Let's hope the situation doesn't become too serious.
