London's Mayor - Ken Livingstone -  is one of the very few
politicians who has  battled almost alone to protect
endangered species from "developers" (better known as
destroyers). His political enemies have ever since attacked
him for being a newt-lover (newts are amphibians like frogs
but with long tails like lizards).

As Leader of the Greater London Council he created an
ecology unit ... and eventually was elected as Mayor (not
Lord Mayor - a different job!) by the people despite being
opposed by Tony Blair's "New Labour" and the Conservatives. 
A bit like the Don Dunstan triumph.

And as a naturalist he knows full well that you can
encourage animals weeds just like plants weeds - but giving
them habitat and food.  I just wish we had someone like him
to lead controls on Silver Gulls.....
