Pigeons, doves, egrets, trillers, and pipits

While everyone is asking "why is it so" type questions, can I throw in a
couple that are puzzling me

1. Varied Triller - what is so "varied" about it? - all the standard field
guides show no variation in plumage (except male/female/juvenile and that
holds for many species)

2. Richard's Pipit - Who was Richard?
