We spent a week in Byron Bay over Xmas and while there were no mega birds it was good to become reacquainted with various birds of coastal northern NSW.

Highlights were:

* 3 spp of fairy wren in the national park to the south of the headland at BB
* Mangrove Honeyeater in the same park
* a Sooty Owl heard at Protestors' Falls, Nightcap NP

Another good thing about BB is the apparent absence of Indian Mynahs.

On the way back down the Pacific Highway and Hume Highway to Canberra we saw three good birds:

1. Square-tailed Kite nr Kempsey
2. Beautiful Firetail speeding like a bullet across the Highway nr the Gosford turn-off 3. White-throated Nightjar over the Hume Highway at dusk nr the Nepean River crossing.
