Hi Paul,
 
When I started birdwatching I too noticed their size and thought that they must suffer greatly at the hands (or guns) of shooters (who needs a turkey after all!), but asking around it seems that they are not very palatable and not favoured by shooters.  I don;t know what their eggs are like, but perhaps their distaste has saved them.
