A great morning's birding at Jack Smith Lake south of Sale Vic. The lake
level is dropping, producing large areas of varied habitat for the different
types of birds. The highlights were 50+ Great Crested Grebes, most in
breeding plumage, 200+ Whiskered Terns, 10 Great Egrets, 6 Little Egrets,
both these species in breeding plumage, thousands of Teal, a large number of
Hardhead, and thousands of waders in the distance. We had a great look at a
Swamp Harrier, hovering low over the water and watching intently. After some
time it dropped and dipped its hooks into the water, and plucked forth a
Coot which had been trying to make its escape by swimming under water. The
Coot proved a bit too much to handle however, and regained the water, to
continue its submarine journey, the Harrier eventually moved off to try for
something a bit easier. Duncan Fraser.
