Hi birders

Just back from a few days working between Murrayville and Cowangie in
the Victorian mallee region. My study sites were more or less devoid of
birds, but a few interesting observations in the vicinity.

GREY FALCON
Single birds sighted on 4 occasions around Cowangie. Probably a pair,
as I saw what looked like a male (twice) and a female (twice). Seen on
farmland and over the Mallee Highway. Crippling views of a perched male
bird at one point - allowed my approach to within 50-60m before flying
off.

SCARLET-CHESTED PARROT
Two splendidly plumaged males seen on Ngallo South Road about 1km south
of the Mallee Highway, in roadside mallee near Carina Park homestead.

Not a great deal else though. Local mallee birds seemed somewhat
depleted in numbers, apart from lots and lots of Blue Bonnets and Mallee
Ringnecks. Rufous Fieldwren seen at one boinka site.

Cheers -- Lawrie
