I'm not going to attempt to do a sound / recording summary, but the following
info might be useful - when I get a chance I'll find some URLs about the topic.

format - high quality &

files - originally for Macs but now others
ACC 700Kb New compression format
- better compression
(Advanced Audio Compression) than MP3 but similar audio quality
MIDI 5Kb-500Kb File format for electronic
instruments and
sequencers, etc - irrelevant for recorded sound
although
some software convert to/from MIDI
I would think that only WAV AIFF and CD-DA are suitable for recording birdsong.
There's a freeware utility for Macs called SoundApp which converts to & from a
wide variety of sound files formats. A far better and more expensive option is
Sound Edit 2, now sold by Macromedia (Dreamweaver, Director, Flash, etc) which
allows you to edit various parameters of sound files.
