Hi All,
I've been asked to make a request to all birders (Australia and
World-wide) who have visited the designated faunal protection area
around Samsonvale Cemetery (Joyner's Hill, Gold's Scrub Lane and Kobble
Creek BBQ area, Samsonvale SE Qld) in search of rarities (such as King
Quail, Red-backed Buttonquail, Grass Owl and other important grassland
species) to supply details of species seen etc.
It appears that last week a permit was granted by the SEQ Waterboard to
cut the grassland in these area to prevent the onset of a bush-fire
(unfortunately the contractors actually caused a large one which
probably resulted in the loss of nesting species from the large area of
grassland across the lake from the cemetery!)
Apparently the authorities concerned were unaware of the abundance of
rare species that inhabit the area and have asked us to supply evidence
that they do occur there and they will take steps to change the
fire-reduction strategy to prevent this happening in the future. At this
time I would appreciate lists of species seen with dates etc to be sent
to Marie and I for collation. Look forward to hearing from you,
Tom
