Hi Desley, There have been a number of accounts here in Victoria's Box-Ironbark forests of members of the parrot family nesting in hollows at the base of trees due to the lack of hollows above ground. This does of course render them very vulnerable to predation by dogs, cats and foxes and demonstrates the importance of high hollows for roosting and nesting! And as it is currently breeding season for many birds, competition for hollows would be at its greatest, so chances are that many are trying to rear young in any hollow they can find, even at ground level. It would be interesting to see the success rate of fledglings.
