I just wanted to thank the people who gave me advice on places to go in SA. We had a great time.

The birding highlight was Port Augusta and the Arid Lands Botanic Garden. On the first afternoon the weather was cold and windy with occasional drifts of rain and we saw few new birds. However when we went back next morning we saw the chirruping wedgebills (in the way of birds they spent 20 mins calling in bushes until we had finally seen one, then they came out and posed). Driving out we saw white-winged fairy wrens the other bird we hoped to see.

The Barossa Valley was lovely and the tourist people very helpful, although they look at you strangely when you ask about the sewage ponds. We also went to the Clare Valley, the Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula. I can recommend the self catering cottages available in most areas - very good value for money.

My latest travel tip is to take photos of all sides of your hire car with a camera which shows the time when you return it to an unstaffed area. This will give you evidence when the hire company contacts you hours later to say you returned the car damaged - we are still fighting this. At least I paid to reduce the excess - a good thing because they make the charge against your credit card even before contacting you.
