Hi all,
Had a quick whiz around a couple of wetlands and the Cairns Esplanade on
Saturday 3/8/02. Had a Red-kneed Dotterel at Yorkeys Knob golf course lagoon
(16° 48 35S 145° 42 51E) , an uncommon visitor to our coast, no sign of the
Little Kingfisher seen here a couple of weeks previous. Crimson Finches were
easy to see here. Australian Wood Duck were at Cattana Road lagoon at
Smithfield (16° 50 07S 145° 41 48E), another uncommon visitor to Cairns. The
Cairns Esplanade had one Great-crested Grebe swimming around, there has been
up to 4 recently. Some Great Knot in breeding plumage but not much variety
in the waders yet - Eastern Curlew, Whimbrel, Grey-tailed Tattler, a few
Bar-tailed Godwit and a small number of Red-necked Stint. Mangrove Robins
were easy to see at the northern end of the Esplanade in the mangroves
(surprise, surprise!), also here were Large-billed Gerygone and Shining
Flycatcher (mobs of sandfly's too)
