Further to John Boyce's request for vertebrate lists.

A mammal colleague of mine here in NRE East Melbourne recommends you could try
the IUCN website (  Although they are mainly concerned with
threatened species, they produce a series of Action Plans which list all species
(see -

My contact also advises that the Smithsonian Institution publishes a list of
recognised species - but I am not sure how up to date that is - clearly, any
hard copy material is out of date before it even reaches the shelves.
