Terry's piece has reminded me of trying to use Russian binoculars recently.

Whilst trekking in Tajikistan a couple of years ago we had a Russian guide.
On a couple of occasions he passed his binoculars [his pride and joy] to me
so that I could share his views of the mountains. Unfortunately, they were
so badly in need of a service/repair and I couldn't see anything through the
blur/haze/etc.

All I could do was smile and say thanks. If I had been carrying my own
binoculars I would have been tempted to give them to him.
