This seems to be a very good year for White-necked Herons near the coast. They have been very common in the south west of Western Australia since early May. This is unusual as in my experience they usually appear in numbers in October / November near Perth (e.g. Forrestdale Lake and near Armadale golf course). There were some last summer, but not as many as are now being seen throughout the south west (many reports from Kalbarri to Albany).

I assume that they normally return north / inland. Perhaps their normal areas are still dry?
