G'day all

Many thanks to those who made suggestions as to the identity of the 'rock
plover' in western Victoria. The most common suggestions were Australian
Dotterel and Banded Lapwing. I've never seen an Australian Dotterel anywhere
and doubt if they were ever common on the basalt plains of western Victoria.
The most likely candidate is therefore the Banded Lapwing. I've recorded these
on numerous occasions on the research farm here in Hamilton. Invariably they
are in pairs or small flocks in the middle of bare or plowed paddocks. They may
be less common than in the past but my records only go back to 1982 and really
only around Hamilton.

We had a pair on the farm here a couple of weeks ago - first record in seval
