Dear All,

It is with pleasure that The Victorian Regional Group of Birds Australia
(VicGroup) invites applications for the VicGroup Research Grants from
postgraduate students at Victorian Universities and Colleges. Typically,
grants of $500-1,500 will be awarded for the support of field-based
research projects for one year. Each grant may be renewed for another year
provided that a second application is made indicating that satisfactory
progress has been made.

To be eligible for support students must be currently enrolled in a
postgraduate degree at a Victorian University or College. Applications must
be approved by the student's supervisor(s) and submitted by them through
the Institute's Office for Research and/or Graduate Studies Office. A
letter from that Office must accompany the application stating that the
Institution is willing to accept the grant and that it will be exempt from
all administrative and other charges. Grants are made on the strict
understanding that funds will be exempt from University or College
administration charges.

The closing date for the 2002 round of grant applications is 31/7/2002.

The VicGroup Research Grants for 2001 will be restricted to projects
involving the study of Box-Ironbark woodland birds of Victoria. These are
species that are resident in, or migrate to, the Box-Ironbark forests and
woodlands of Victoria. Fieldwork must be carried out in Victoria.
Applications in the following areas of research are encouraged:

· Fieldwork designed to gain an understanding of the behaviour and ecology
of woodland birds.
· Conservation biology of threatened woodland birds and management of their
habitat.

Applications will not be considered unless all necessary permits have been
obtained from the appropriate government authorities and ethics committees
or have been applied for and are received and copies forwarded to the
VicGroup prior to 31/8/02.

Further enquires should be directed to Dr Doris Graham.
