Ponds on roundabouts may not be such a daft idea, especially if the ?roundabout? is actually quite a large area. Around Canberra for example there are several ponds on those triangular areas where freeway-type roads intersect (what do they call these, ?gores??), and some of these areas are quite large, and the land round about in not bad condition (reserves &c).

Even small roundabouts might be useful. I see Wood Duck regularly grazing with their now almost grown-up ducklings on a narrow median strip near where I work, and the parents do a very good job of keeping their offspring off the road: I haven?t seen a dead duck along that stretch of road.

Also remember that many urban roads are almost deserted all the hours of the night, and for at least the first hour or so of daylight.
