G'day Bob

You aroused my curiosity. I went through 10 other field guides and found they generally agree with the lengths in the guides you listed (i.e. in disagreement with HANZAB). Sooty Tern lengths given varied from 40 to 46.5cm and Bridled Tern length varied from 35 to 42cm.

I couldn't find any mention in Hanzab of how body length was measured but they do talk about lengths of various componenets and about shrinkage of skins. Presumably Morcombe used Hanzab's lengths - does he say so?

There was a paper in the Australian Bird Watcher some years ago on discrepancies in wader dimensions as given in field guides. Great variation.
