Reports of protected birds being hunted had been reaching BirdLife's offices on
a daily basis, the organisation said yesterday.

It said it had received reports of swifts and swallows being shot at in Mizieb, and of the hunting of other protected birds such as marsh harriers, hoopoes and

The grey heron (in picture) was found at Marsascala on Wednesday morning and
given to BirdLife by distraught members of the public.

It was passed on to International Animal Rescue (Malta) to be cared for.

However, it was found to be suffering from multiple fractures caused by
illegally large shotgun pellets.

As a result it could not be released back into the wild and had to be put down
humanely, BirdLife said.
