Hi Sally/Brent,
Someone sent me this address for some American software for Macs called 'Bird Brain 5.0':

Here are the other replies - hope they can help:

>From John:
Greg, You can easily create your own, using Filemaker and a bit of imagination. I keep basic data in such a database, and though I don't maintain lists of this cross-referencing sort, it could readily be done.  I can send you the list of all Australian species in an appropriate format.
Cheers,

>From Russell:

First, check your Mac has at least 128Mb Ram  -if not go and upgrade it as memory is still fairly cheap.   You can get a single 128Mb card to replace/add to your existing memory for around $60.

Secondly, get a copy of Virtual PC from Connectix.  Go for version 3 or 4.  5 is better but needs OS9.2 or OSX.

Then buy BirdInfo for Windows from Simon Bennett or one of the other PC-based bird programs.  There are only one or two decent ones for Mac but they are really for European birds or USA (I think this one at least lets you set Australia as your base).
I looked high and low before getting BirdInfo.  Actually, it was for my father, but I had a bit of a play with it at first ...  and then wrote my own in Filemaker Pro!  But the BirdInfo one runs beautifully under Virtual PC.  The only reason I didn¹t get my own was that I had to teach database design this year so thtought I should practise what I preach.  Also, I had acres of Excel spreadsheets (about 20 years worth) so couldn¹t face the tricky import 1 month at a time into BirdInfo.

Cheers

Russell

PS I can¹t give you my FMPro one because it relies a bit too heavily on Simon¹s BirdInfo Data structures, and I really don¹t want to infringe his intellectual property!
