I'm sure these swamps are far from dismal and, no I would think that an
atlas record based on this evidence would not be acceptable.

The drumming patterns made by some woodpeckers are as distinctive as their calls, so I don't see why hearing the drumming rather than the call would be any less
acceptable for recording the presence of such a bird for an atlas.

Of course in this particular case, the drumming pattern is simple enough (a double rap) that there may be some doubt, and because it is believed to be extinct, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, so a photo would be nice...
