I have just returned from a quick trip to
Brisbane and the north coast of NSW. It was not a birding trip
but I did manage to get a little birding along the way and even managed to get
two new birds - a pectoral sandpiper at Hope Island and Broad-billed sandpiper
at Wynnum (suburb of Brisbane).
What concerns me though was the lack of small birds
in the coastal bushland in some places I visited in the vicinity of Brisbane,
the Gold Coast and Kingscliff in northern NSW. I wasn't in any place
for long, so maybe I coincided with quiet times, but as I know some of these
place had been sprayed for mosquitoes, I am wondering what impact this is having
on the insect eating birds. Has any study been done on
this?
We spent our last night at Iluka, where we were
nearly carried away by the mozzies, but there were birds galore
there.
