No-one seems to have responded to John's querie concerning Superb Parrots.
This is not necessarily my field of expertise but I'll give it a go. I
should prefix this by saying that a colleague here at NPWS, Dubbo is
gathering records of Superbs and following up breeding records,
particularly in the north of the range.

I'm not sure that Superbs have expanded their range. However, there is
mounting evidence that some birds remain in what was previously thought to
be wintering areas and some are breeding there. This includes areas as
far north as Molong. At other locations, such as Trangie and Collie, the
birds are reported to only disappear for a month or so - some birds may
even be present all year.

It is now thought that there are probably three breeding populations, all
with different migration paths and wintering areas.

This past year appears to have been a good breeding season for Superbs. I
went on one of Peter's trips to confirm breeding in the Parkes - Cowra -
Molong area and there was no shortage of nesting activity including plenty
of young birds out of the nest.

I hope this sheds some light on the situation, albeit well north of
Canberra, and almost certainly not the population that is seen in
Canberra.
