Dear birders,
Visited the Royal National Park Wednesday 13 February,
south of Sydney, to see how things are regenerating
following the recent fires. Lots of rain this last
month so there is good regrowth - bracken up high,
grass trees flowering, epicormic growth where trees
burnt, etc. Will no doubt have a wonderful spring
flowering.
Down at Wattle Forest, Audley, highlights were 7 Brown
Pigeons, 2 Azure Kingfishers, Black-faced Monarchs,
Crested Shrike-tit, Golden Whistler and a Nankeen
Nightheron, but no fruit doves - there is a lot of
fruit in the Sandpaper figs, and tiny berries on
another rainforest shrubby tree -name is unknown to
me. A Lyrebird was practising above Lady Carrington's
Drive in the burnt area. There are lots of Red-browed
Finches - good breeding season? All this despite
constant rain between 10.30 and 11.30 am.
The Sulphur Crested Cockatoos were digging into some
Bunya nuts that had fallen from a tree by the bridge,
and making off with the big nuts, waiting their turn
as one at a time they attacked a nut from the
flowering end.
At Bonnievale, 12 Nankeen Nightherons flew out of the
big figtree by the edge of the lagoon, over the water
to join 3 others perched in the casuarinas - one
juvenile was seen. A pair of Chestnut Teal had 3
ducklings.
There were 7 Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos (1
juvenile) perched beside the road between the
Bundeena/Maienba (spelling?) turnoff.
All the best to all
