Thanks, Rohan, I'll have to get back up there at some stage soon.
Last time I was in that area we turned up a couple of
Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers not far from that clearing.
Good luck with the PhD,
Regards,
Greg

Hi Greg,
There were lots of Blue-faced PFs at the grassy clearing. I visited the site twice for about 1/2 an hour each time seeing 20-30 on the first visit (very early morning)and 5-10 on the second visit (late afternoon) along with plenty of Red-browed Finches. Their numbers seem to vary a lot between  seasons and I understand they are a lot harder to locate in the dry season. I visited the site in December several years ago and found just a handful over several days in the vicinity of the clearing. I've also seen them up on Mt Misery right up near Cooktown around the same time of year but on that occasion they were feeding in Casuarina woodland rather than rainforest clearings.

The Black-throated finches were on the road side about five km north of Mt Carbine (on the rd to Cooktown and the cape) in open melaleuca woodland. They flushed off the road side as I drove past. They are obviously pretty scarce around here as much of the habitat I was searching for the BB Button-Quail in was also suitable for the finch and this was the only site at which I located them.
All the best
Rohan

Hi Rohan,
Just interested to know how many Blue Faced Parrotfinches
you encountered on Mt Lewis? I visited that exact spot
about 3 years ago (supposedly a reliable haunt) and only turned
up 1 male over 3 different trips. Good to see their numbers increasing.
Any idea where they disappear to after the breeding season?
Also, where did you see the Black-Throated Finches?
I had trouble locating them last time I was up that way,
Regards,
Greg Oakley
