G'day Jill and All,

I am tidying up my emails before I go and have some
medical photographic work done.

"Smile at the birdie" I hope not :^D

With the world's water levels KNOWN to be climbing and
with many estimates as to how much? a thought may be
spared for the concept of floating roosts anchored to
the sea floor with adequate length chains and weights
that are adjustable? to compensate to the oceans
rising?

Hello everyone,

John's suggestion of floating wader roosts is valid
and praiseworthy on first consideration. Indeed it
might be the best way to rehouse waders at some
locations.

We considered this when looking for the best solution
for artificial wader roosts in the Pumicestone
Passage, SEQld. We also considered enhancing sandbanks
in the safer, central areas of the passage, where
waders might be left more in peace, than in land-based
locations.

We regretfully rejected these options for a variety of
reasons:

1.
Disturbing the Passage floor would inevitably cause
the death of benthic fauna, and disturb the seal.

Wouldn't a cyclone do something similar? and if modern
day methods were used for anchoring the site then the
seafloor area used would be no more then 20 square
centimetres per anchored roost site?

2.
Enhancing (raising the level of) a sandbank would
change hydrological patterns, which could have an
unfavourable flow-on effect to other marine life. It
would also possibly revert eventually to the former
level unless fortified.

So what is being said here is it definately cannot be
fortified at all?

3.
Any elevated area in the middle of the Passage would
be a magnet for fishermen..

Not true simply place internet camera's on the site to
take instant photo's and increase the revenue in the
local courts?

4.
QPWS would probably never allow such a structure in
the
Marine Park anyway.

Why???????

5.
Cost. It would need to be a sturdy enough structure,
which would remain immobile during cyclonic events,
and
which would not drag along the Passage floor.

We do have oil drilling platforms that stand up to
cyclones?

We thought it was a good idea at first. At least, I
did when it first occured to me. But my colleagues
were quick to point out its flaws.

Regards,
Jill
