Early on Tuesday morning it was still and overcast. I was trudging back
to the car after satiating on five Spotted, three Baillons and a single
Spotless Crake, seven different ducks, Grebes, Gallinules and Moorhens,
Little and Intermediate Egrets, Black-fronted Dotterels, Sharptailed
Sandpipers, a Pelican and a Swan among the Grassbirds and Reedwarblers at
McGraths Hill Sewerage Farm and Nature Reserve, near Windsor.
Suddenly a Little Bittern, with distinctive black and tan wings and
trailing legs, flew up and over the massed cumbungi 50m south of the main
causeway, then dropped back down into the reeds and disappearing. It would
probably been scopable within the cumbungi from the bank below the sewerage
works if you had the time to sit there and scan. Not a particularly good
place to have lunch though, it's really on the nose.
                                      Cheers
                                              Michael
