I agree Green-winged Teal Anas crecca
carolinensis. According to my European feild guide, both races occur
in Great Britan with A. crecca being one of the most common
ducks and commonly known simply as the Teal. A. crecca carolinensis is
described as a vagrent from North America in Europe. The American race also
lacks the white outline around the eye, it has grey(darker) underparts, buff
breast and white cresent running along the breastside.
Is there any records of this species being kept in
captivity in Australia? Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata and the American
Wood Duck Aix sponsa are kept by aviculturalists specialising in
wildfowl. The Wildfowl Society of WA may have some information on this species,
in case it is an escapee. Sorry, I did have a pamphlet with their phone number,
but of course it has gone missing at this point in time. Try the Avicultural
Society of WA for thier contact.
