A flock of 12 Superb Parrots flew over the Minore Road, 10 km W Dubbo on
8.1.02, my first sighting of this species in this district. In the same
area were Grey-crowned Babblers, Western Gerygone and Inland Thornbill. At
Western Plains Zoo were numerous Speckled Warblers and an Intermediate
Egret.

5km E Bilpin on the Bell's Line Rd tried my best to avoid running over a
male Painted Button-quail, made difficult by a tail gating semi-trailer.
Shortly afterwards a Grey Currawong was seen on the roadside midway between
Bilpin and Lithgow. Both of these were on the 7.1.02.

For reptile-amphibian folks some interesting Dubbo sightings were a female
Gilbert's Dragon (also referred to as Lophognathus burnsi by Wells and
Wellington) excavating a nest on the Minore Road, a couple of Southern
Spiny-tailed Geckos (Diplodactylus intermedius) at WPZ, and two Queensland
Banjo Frogs (Limnodynastes terraereginae) on the Minore Road. All of these
species are close to or beyond their reported distributional limits. It was
also good to find a couple of Green Tree Frogs, Thick-tailed Geckos, Stone
Geckos, Carlia tetradactyla and unfortunately a road killed Sand Goanna.
Still the PBQ demonstrated just how dangerous and difficult it can be to
avoid collecting wildlife on the road.

Cheers

Dion
