Afternoon all,

This is just a short note for anyone who happens to be in the Bairnsdale area of
East Gippsland and thinking they might drop in somewhere for a spot of birding.
Yesterday morning (Sunday 6/1/02) I went to Fairy Dell, a small scenic reserve
just west of Bruthen and about 7 km off the Bruthen-Bairnsdale Road (which is
often used as an alternative route to the Princes Highway in this area). Fairy
Dell is a small rainforest gully surrounded by a variety of eucalypt-dominated
forests. There is a nice little picnic area, from which a short walk to the
rainforest leaves.

I only had about an hour, and was still rapidly adding birds to the list as I
left. There were birds everywhere, and it seemed that all the Lilly Pilly trees
in the gully were either flowering or fruiting, much to the delight of at least
six species of honeyeater. Highlights included Scarlet Honeyeater, lots of
Black-faced Monarchs and Brown Gerygone (all near the western limits of their
range), a Powerful Owl with a Greater Glider in its talons, Wonga Pigeon,
White-throated Gerygone and a couple of dogs/dingoes on the drive in.
Altogether, a worthwhile little diversion for anyone who happens to be in the
area or passing through.

Cheers,

Paul Peake.
