Hi everybody -

With reference to the bushfires in New South Wales, it is evident that the
impact on natural habitats has already been heavy and will be heavier still
before the fires are out. Isolated or local populations of some some
species may have been wiped out and the medium to long term effects are
unknown.

I only hope that future changes in bird abundance and distribution will
continue to be tracked through the BA Atlas and other studies so that we
will be better prepared in future to protect our bushland and its native
fauna from fire regimes very different to the natural ones they evolved with.

Meanwhile, there is a Birds Australia information sheet - 'Forests, Flames
and Feathers. Helping native birds with food and shelter after bushfires' -
that we originally put together in the aftermath of the January 1994
bushfires in NSW. I hope that it will be useful enough to distribute to to
people with fire-affected properties again.

It is intended to provide some basic information to the general public
about approaches to helping birds after bushfires in the short, medium and
long term. It is a 2-page A4 MS Word file that can be simply printed and
photocopied on both sides of a single A4 sheet and distributed ad lib.

If anybody would find this useful, I can send it to you as an attachment.
Just let me know. Moreover, if anybody (and especially those with
practical experience of coping with wildfire and affected fauna) would like
to comment constructively on the contents, it would be very welcome.

Cheers,
Hugo
