BUNGAWALBIN WETLANDS BIRD MONITORING PROJECT
Wetland Care Australia
The Bungawalbin catchment is located on the far north coast of
New South Wales. It forms part of the Richmond River catchment and covers around
1773 square kilometres. Unlike other catchments on the north coast, the
Bungawalbin catchment still has large areas of native vegetation left intact.
These include dry sclerophyll forest, wet sclerophyll forest, paperbark and
casuarina swamp forests, swampy sedgelands, and a small pocket of
rainforest.
Wetland Care Australia is a national non-government,
not-for-profit organisation concentrating on the preservation of Australia’s
wetlands. Wetland Care Australia has received funding to work with landholders
in the Bungawalbin catchment to manage and rehabilitate wetlands.
A number of sites across the catchment will be surveyed monthly
to record the composition and abundance of bird species using the wetlands and
the immediate areas around the wetlands. This information will be co-ordinated
with other sources of information including bird, animal and plant community
data, to provide an assessment the types of birds using the wetlands. This
project aims to assist the Bungawalbin community to understand the complexities
of their wetlands and assist in future rehabilitation and management.
The project seeks to involve birdwatchers, landholders,
students and any interested people in the survey work and ongoing monitoring. If
you would like to know more or would like to become involved please contact
