The Wandering Whistling Duck in the pond at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney
wanders over from Taronga Zoo. It has a zoo band and has been coming to the
Botanic Gardens for about 5 years . It generally stays for about 2 -3 weeks and
then apparently returns to the zoo. During breeding season it usually gets
friendly with one of the "resident" Pacific Black Ducks.

I was in Sydney on business earlier this week and I visited the Sydney
Botanical Gardens on Tuesday afternoon. I was very surprised to see a single
wandering whistling duck on the main pond. The only other ducks on the pond
were pacific black ducks, whilst wood ducks were grazing nearby and I saw
some mallards and PBD on another pond. I am not familiar with this bird, but
my Slater told me that the wandering whistling duck was well out of range.
Is there an explanation for its appearance? I followed up the sighting with
a visit on Wednesday morning and while I saw my first channel-billed
cuckoos, the wandering whistling duck had wandered.
