Hello Birdos, including Doug, Barry and Dave (who responded to my RLWhistler query)

I'm more confused about the habitat requirements of RLWhistlers now than I was before I asked! Many experienced birdos have different observations on the habitat. It does seem as though the Red-loreds may be in somewhat atypical habitat at Round Hill NR.

There was no support for my theory on competition with Gilbert's Whistlers. One interesting suggestion was that most of the RLW habitat in central NSW may have already been cleared thus causing the extinction of most of the RLW populations. Round Hill, Nombinnie and Yathong Nature Reserves may have always been borderline habitat for them. So, while it looks on the surface as though there is large areas of mallee conserved, it may never have had many RLWhistlers. What the crucial factors are I have little idea!

I think that the RLWhistler requires some serious research.

Cheers,

Mick Todd
