Hi Birders,
A trip to Ash Island in the Hunter Estuary NSW in rain today did not yield the Australian Bittern, recently seen by others but I can report that the migratory waders are returning with 11 Eastern Curlews, 1 Whimbrel, 3 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, 7 Greenshanks, 1 Marsh Sandpiper and 3 Red-necked Stints being present at low tide. Other birds also present included 269 Avocets, 98 Black-winged Stilts, 12 Pinkeared Duck & 126 Australian Shovellers, as well as Red-kneed & Black-fronted Dotterels, Swamp Harriers, Brown Falcon & Nankeen Kestrels.

Meanwhile back on the Central Coast, a Black Bittern was seen at Wingello Ck Wyoming when on a walk with the Wingello Ck Green corp group on Friday 24th August along with 20 Topknot Pigeons; our first returning Wedge-tailed Shearwaters off Soldiers Point on 26 August & the first Curlew Sandpiper for the season; 3 Double-banded Plovers in breeding plumage at Pelican Point, Norah Head on 28 August; and 30 White-fronted Terns , 4 Black-browed Albatross, Fairy Prions, Fluttering & Huttons Shearwaters off Soldiers Point, Norah Head on 28 August 2001.
