G'day to all,

Spring is nicely underway in northern Victoria. Some recent good showers of
rain have begun to renew the country. We have had poor rains on the whole,
and could do with more, but it is amazing how rain is needed for the country
responds to even showers at this time of the year.

Not only are the wattles flowering profusely, but with the warm sunny days
and rain there is a lot of new spring growth in the flora world and the
birds are showing it is springtime too. The Pied Currawongs that come each
winter from the high country to the east of us have been gone from the area
for several weeks now. There is a lot of building activity by the resident
birds, such as the Treecreepers, Fairy-wrens, Thornbills, Welcome Swallows,
Aust Shelducks and Black Ducks seeking hollows etc. and some, such as the
Aust Magpies and Little and Aust Ravens have young in the nest. There is a
lot more birdsong in the bush too, and it is great to hear for example the
Pied Butcherbirds, Gilbert's Whistlers, Grey Shrike-thrushes and
Rufous-Whiltlers making the bush resound with their glad songs. We also know
it is spring because we see the birds that move out of the area in winter
returning. It has been great to see over the last few days, White-winged
Trillers, Horsefield's Bronze-Cuckoos, Black-tailed Native-hens and
White-bellied Cuckoo-shrikes!

A wonderful time of the year. Trust you have time to get out and enjoy some
of it too!
