Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has made any observations regarding the moving
of a bower bird's bower.
I understand that there are many complicated issues involved with
interfering with natural processes and I don't mean to cause any
distress to anyone.
My question is prompted by an observation I made of a Great Bowerbird
bower in the suburb of Rasmussen, Townsville, Qld. This bower has
existed for many years, located on a foot path under a tree. The
adjacent house is surrounded by a 5 foot wooden slat fence. Recently I
noticed that the bower seemed to have been destroyed. Sad, but not
surprising considering the number of young children that play in the
area.
Last weekend while passing the area I again noticed the bowerbird
calling from a tree within the yard. On a closer look I could see the
bower now located in a garden bed under a tree. Considering the location
of the bird to the bower and the birds collection of ornaments it seems
that the bird has made it's home here. But one thing I did notice was
the lack of the mess of sticks etc. that normally surround a bower. It
would appear that the bower has been picked up as a whole and relocated
to a new location within the yard. A distance of about 10 metres from
it's original location. There is a clear constrast of newly woodchiped
garden bed and the old weathered look of the bower.
I am making the assumption that the bower was moved by "persons unknown"
and that the bowerbird has located it again and taken ownership.
Is this behaviour normal for bowerbirds?
