G'day All,

Spent a wonderful three hours at The Rock yesterday afternoon (Mon 27/8/01), walking to the highest point (excellent 3 hr return walk with a few good signs). Great views of the surrounding landscape and the rest of the range from the top. The Rock Nature Reserve and The Rock (as in the town) are located about one hours drive north of Albury, and are about 20 minutes southwest of Wagga Wagga in the NSW Southwest Slopes. A great patch of bush, the highlights yesterday being Turquoise Parrot, Speckled Warbler, Red-capped and Scarlet Robin, Varied Sitella, Brown Treecreeper, Dusky Woodswallow, White-browed Babbler and Grey-crowned Babblers just out of the park. Excellent views of Peregrine Falcons riding thermals at the top and calling at their roosts/nests? on the cliffs was also great to see. I highly recommend a visit to this little known park of great significance. Reading a recent NPWS report on the park, i now realise Glossy Black Cockatoo have been recorded there. This is the closest site to Albury-Wodonga that i know of. Below is the full bird list. There is quite a bit of White Box there that is in full flower at the moment. Would have loved more time. There must be records of species like Bush Stone-Curlew, Painted Honeyeater, Swift Parrot, Gilbert's Whistler and Hooded Robin for the park somewhere. Cheers, Matthew Herring, Albury.
