Hi all

Common Mynas were introduced to Canberra about thirty years ago. A person introduced 110 birds between 1968 and 1970. They were originally introduced to the suburb of Forrest (inner south). They have had a strong hold in the Woden Valley area (south of Lake Burley Griffin) for most of the last thirty years. It's only been in the last ten years or so that mynas have reached areas such as Belconnen (north west of city and Lake BG), where they are now increasing in density. There's many thousands of birds now. They are also getting into the semi rural outskirts of town, and out along the highways. Dr Chris Tidemann at ANU is currently working on control methods.

Cheers

Hi All,

Perhaps someone knows about this............

My husband is holidaying in his home town, Canberra (actually he grew up
over the border in Struggletown - Queanbeyan) and speaks on an invasion of
Common Mynas. He was at a dinner party last night, and someone, whom he
usually regards as no dill, said that the mynas became established in
Canberra, after a breeding pair was released. I was last in Canberra only
about four or five years ago, and can recall no mynas at that time.

Does anyone know how it happened?

Cheers
