Today the Gold Coast Bird Observers visited the Lockyer Valley. Twenty
birders in six cars made the trip (about 400 km return).
Firstly the disappointments (see Bill Jolly's postings from yesterday):
No Australian Pratincoles
No Blue-winged Kookaburras
Only one male Cotton Pygmy-goose at Seven Mile Lagoon - none at Lake
Atkinson
No Black-necked Stork
No Red-capped Plovers or Black-tailed Godwit
No Swamp Harriers or Little Eagles
No Dusky Woodswallows.
However, there were more than enough good birding moments to make up for
these disappointments. Just over ninety species were seen during the day
with the highlight being a pair of nesting White-backed Swallows at close
range just behind the Gatton race course.
With the temperature in the mid to high twenties and brilliant sunshine, it
was a perfect day for birding. It was certainly worth the drive.
Just a reminder that the Gold Coast Bird Observers have an outing every
Thursday. Most of these outings do not require so much driving. If you
will be visiting the Gold Coast on a Thursday and would like to accompany
