Michael Norris gave an indication of the whereabouts of Edithvale wetlands in
suburban coastal se Melbourne.

It may be of readers interest to know a little more about this site.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s I mapped into a Geographic Information System
(GIS) all Victoria's wetlands. This was done using air photo interpretation of
thousands of colour and black and white aerial photographs. In non-built up
areas you can still see old wetland boundaries even after drains had been put in
and the original hydrology changed.

With Edithvale and a number of other wetlands now largely 'hidden' by buildings.
etc, we sometimes needed to use old parish maps (and other sources) from the
time of Melbourne settlement. My information at the time indicated that
Edithvale wetlands was originally one enormous site stretching many kilometres
east to almost Cranbourne and north towards Dandenong. The site today is just a
patch on the original extent of this wetland and we can only wonder what a mecca
it must have been for water and waderbirds in the past.

This data of previous and curent extent is held as a layer in the Department of
Natural Resources and Environment Corporate Geographic Informaion System.
