Hi Birders,
I too have noticed lots of Peregrines about lately, mainly young
birds but the odd adult out and about near or in the Western
Treatment Plant, Werribee. In the last two years I've been at
Werribee I've seen 3 or 4 peregrines in total, in the last month I've
seen about 5.
I should also remind everyone that the Victorian Peregrine Project
is currently, and has for many years, banded peregrines to try and
determine, amongst other things, dispersal distances and age at
first breeding etc. So if you happen to see a peregrine please
check its legs for bands and report banded birds to myself or the
Australian Bird and Bat Banding scheme and I'll pass the message
on to the relevant people.
As always, when in the treatment plant or surround please also
keep an eye out for banded brown falcons, sightings of these birds
can be passed directly to me.
Finally, I have always found Grey falcons to be reasonably
common in the right sort of habitat and area, ie channel country,
they certainly aren't the 'grey ghosts' some people think.
