Hello all,
On Sunday I conducted a search for the Shy Hylacola as well as some of the
other mallee specials that inhabit or once inhabited Pulletop NR which is
approximately 60 km north of Griffith in central west NSW. Although the
conditions weren't great, gusty winds, I couldn't help leaving the reserve
a little pessimistic about their survival here.
The Red-lored Whistler and the Malleefowl have been well documented as
having disappeared from the reserve in the past. I'm wondering whether the
Southern Scrub-robin and the Shy Hylacola have also disappeared.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has visited Pulletop in the last 20 years
and recorded these species, or even to hear from anyone who has visited and
not recorded them. While I'm talking about hylacolas I'd love to hear from
anyone who has recorded hylacolas in the Upper Riverina area. Shy are
supposed to have been recorded in Cocoparra NP NE of Griffith and are at
Charcoal Tank NR south of West Wyalong. Chestnut-rumped are at Ingalba NR
near Temora. John Hobbs recorded Chestnut-rumped on Square Knob near
Leeton. I'm very interested in how the distribution of these two closely
related species pans out.
Cheers,
Mick Todd
