Prompted by the presence in Darwin at the moment of a rather
unusual looking juvenile goshawk I've been trying to research
plumage variation in first-year (grey morph) Grey Goshawk. The
distinctive feature of the Darwin bird is that it has rather dense dark
streaking on the upper breast, which changes to barring on the
lower breast and flanks, similar in pattern to juvenile Brown
Goshawk, though more subdued than in that species. Hanzab (fig
8, pl.12, p177 of the raptors vol) shows a young Grey Gos with
quite strong barring, and V-shaped marks, but makes no mention
of dark streaking.
Has anyone had experience of strongly marked juvenile Grey
Goshawks? I'd much appreciate comments.
