Dear Trevor,
Tannum Sands is a fast growing
beachside town in Central Queensland, Australia. It is a sister town to Boyne
Island, which has an aluminium smelter.
Tannum was once a popular weekend
spot for the people of Gladstone in CQ. It had a population of about 50
permanent residents for many years.
By 1980 a large bridge was built
across the Boyne River. (Now use your atlas for that. LOL)
As workers poured in to build the
aluminium smelter, the population swelled to about 10-15 thousand. Now that's
not big, in many people's opinion, but when you're used to a virtually untouched
fauna & flora reserve, it's a bit of a culture shock.
Although there are supposed to be
strict rules for infrastructure and conservation, developers always seem to have
a way of bending rules and the locals are fighting to keep trees and wildlife
safe.
It really isn't too bad, compared to
many boom towns, but it's not the Tannum Sands I grew up with. Well where is,
these days??
It's a very pretty place and popular
with southern and overseas holidaymakers over the winter
months.
We lived there for 20 years, raising
our two kids there, then recently ,moved to an acreage at a place called
Benaraby, about 15 km inland.
Now that's probably more than you
wanted to know , but you did ask.... he,he,he!

Dear Lesley,
Where on earth in the world is Tannum Sands? You
didn't say in your note to the whole world.
