g'day all,

Syd Curtis raised the subject of Edward Lear.

Yes, he did illustrate some of Gould's books.
His work is considered by many critics to be on par with the drawings of John J. Audubon.

I agree that Edward Lear's illustrations were brilliant !

Here are samples of his nonsense verse....

There was an old man with a beard
Who said "It is just as I feared"
Two owls and a hen
Four larks and a wren
Have all made their nest in my beard
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was an old person of Crowle
Who lived in the nest of an owl;
When they screamed in the nest,
He screamed out with the rest,
That depressing old person of Crowle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was an old man of Dunblane
Who greatly resembled a crane;
But they said, 'Is it wrong,
Since your legs are so long,
To request you won't stayt in Dunblane?'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was an old person of Hove
Who frequented the depths of a grove;
Where he studied his books
With the wrens and the rooks,
That tranquil old person of Hove.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
