Hello Jenny, Martin and birding-aus afficionados,
Being a former (Mornington) Peninsula and Western Port birder, I was
intrigued that fieldwrens were thought to be absent from Phillip Island
until Jenny's recent sighting.
Certainly Roy Wheeler's 1979 book "The Birds of Phillip Island" does not
mention the species as occurring. And Martin points out there are no
records in the Atlas of Vic. Wildlife.
However, upon consulting what I regard as the benchmark list for the area,
Hartley & Peggy Mitchell's "The Birds of Mornington Peninsula, Phillip
Island, French Island and Mud Island" (Peninsula Naturalist 10: 4-9 [August
1975]), the bird has indeed been recorded on Phillip Island (in the
1965-75 period, at least).
I too wouild encourage Jenny to "atlas" her fieldwrens. It seems amazing
that a resident bird like this could be overlooked in such an apparently
heavily watched area.
