G'day birders,
Just a quick few words on recent observations/sightings from the Bendigo
district (central Vic.).
Yesterday (15/7), I visited the Redcastle State Forest (near Costerfield) with
Ted Shimba and Julie Hennessy in search of Spotted Quail-thrush. After a bit of
searching some ideal habitat (dry box-ironbark open forest with tussock ground
storey and an abundance of fallen timber), we located a single male. We
obtained great views from a reasonably close range and heard its unmistakable
high-pitched contact call. I have previously seen SQT a few times at this
location and would regard it to be a regular site for the species.
On June 27, I heard two individual Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoo's in the north-east
section of Kamarooka State Park - the first for the season around Bendigo. I
heard another on July 13 at Moormbool West near Costerfield.
The Bendigo Waste Water Treatment Plant has 'suffered' a little, from a birding
perspective, due to recent heavy rain. The swamp that has produced great views
of Spotless and Australian Spotted Crakes and Buff-banded and Lewin's Rail has
now flooded, severely reducing the chances of observing crakes/rails foraging on
exposed mud. Some sunny conditions forecast for the next few days will help dry
out the swamp a little and maybe (hopefully) re-create the perfect conditions as
seen for the past couple of weeks.
